Research & Grants

Through our efforts to improve healthcare we are committed to advancing research and fostering strategic partnerships that lead to innovative solutions. Our impactful projects include:

1. Partnership for Antimicrobial Stewardship (CwPAMS) scheme.‘Establish a Sustainable center of excellence for Integrated Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention and Control interventions at Makerere University Hospital (SIAMS-IPC) in Uganda’-funding from Commonwealth THET

2. iTECH -Prediction models for stillbirths (only team in Africa that won a grant from Wellcome LEAP based at the hospital -2.6M USD) study centres at Kawempe NRH, Mbale, Hoima and Lira RRHs.

3. Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) involves the temporary occlusion of the aorta, using a percutaneously deployed intravascular balloon, inserted via the femoral artery.

4. Reproductive Tract Infections (RTI) –prevention Practices and mitigation strategies around Makerere University funded by Mak-RIF.

5. Pooled screening of SARS-COV-2in the surrounding communities of Makerere University as a cost-effective strategy for reopening funded by Mak-RIF.

Clinical Trials Directly Supported

(i) Clinical Trial of Natural Therapeutics (CONAT): This is in collaboration with Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation -Office of the President (STI-OP) who are the sponsors of the trial; Mulago National Referral Hospital where the trial is being conducted; Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI); Makerere University Biomedical Research Centre (MakBRC); College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity, Makerere University (COVAB); and finally the innovators of the herbal formulations Busitema University (TazCoV) and Kazire (Vidicine). The trial is Managed by Makerere University lung Institute.

(ii) UBV-01N trial: The drug, UBV-01N, is a product of the Natural Chemotherapeutics Research Institute, anticipated to have antiviral (kill viruses), anti-inflammatory (reduces over reaction of the body to infections) and immunological (directs the immune system in the right direction) abilities.
