Makerere Hospital Designated as a Specialized Teaching Hospital

On Tuesday, 24th September 2024, a five-member team from the Ministry of Health, led by Eng. Otim, the Commissioner in Charge of Infrastructure, visited Makerere University Hospital to assess its progress in regard to grading. Representing Makerere University was Eng. Okuku Owera, Director of Estates and Works. The visit proceeded smoothly, beginning with a tour of the hospital’s various units, followed by a concise PowerPoint presentation and discussion to clarify key points.

During the meeting, the Ministry of Health’s hospital structure system was reviewed in comparison to the current state of Makerere University Hospital. Health Centre III, IV, General Hospital, Regional Referral Hospital, National Referral Hospital and specialized hospital structures and requirements were reviewed. The outcome of this process resulted in the recommendation that the hospital be designated as the “MAKERERE UNIVERSITY SPECIALIZED TEACHING HOSPITAL,” with specialized units in ENT, dentistry, and optometry as the starting units. It was also noted that there are other specialized services provided by Mak like lung health services and infectious diseases under MLI and IDI respectively.

It was agreed during the meeting that the next step is to present the report to the Minister of Health for political endorsement.
